Check, PLEASE!

I finally got around to watching Doubt today - I thought it was fabulous. Oh, Meryl Streep! Anyway, I was confused because I had heard there was like a total did-he-or-didn't-he thing, but for me it was totes HE DID! Did anyone else have a different impression?

Oh, great. My fave restaurant in town was on Check, Please! It's already hard enough to get a table at that place. The good news is they didn't give it a very favorable review.

Speaking of restaurants, me & husband went on a "date" (lately I've noticed that my friends with kids now call their evenings out "dates" where sans kids these events were just, you know, evenings out. Anywho, I merely mention it because I find it amusing) to one of (his) favorite Italian restaurants in The City, and, much to our horror, we discovered that unanticipated opera singing was occurring in the dining room. Experiencing a fair amount of chagrin, we are escorted to a table, but then offered a better table which was right next to wear this dude was belting out some opera. So, I whisper to the waiter, we'll take that one if the singing will be over soon. And he says, Yes, yes, he'll be finished in just a moment. So, the dude finishes, we all clap, and then M & I go slip in behind the table. No sooner do we sit down than another opera singer (and then another, and another) take his place and belt out some Puccini. I mean like, 12 inches away from us. Here. I'll draw a picture for you. It was pretty much like this.

I totes think he didn't.

I loved the juxtaposition of doubt and faith in that movie. I LOVE IT.

Sorry about the opera---that woulda spoiled a "date night" for me, too. Your picture is adorable!

Lovely rendering! Sorry your date was opera-fied. Date night for parents can also include getting fast food, then going to walmart. Pretty sad, huh?

KHM, really, you thought he didn't? huh.

KBM, yes, that is sad. (:

well, what I think is that there is no way to be certain and that was kind of the point---how we handle those kinds of uncertainty is what determines our character, right?

Lord, wasn't Streep's character severe?

It is interesting that we start referring to having dinner together as a "date", but it is sort of a thing that you have to differentiate an evening out (whole family implied) versus going through the effort to carve out some time for just the two of you. Kind of like when one and their significant other don't live together (or live together in, say, a dorm), one has to differentiate "I want time with just you" versus "we're all going out to eat."
When it's just the two of you in a family unit, you can spend all the time you want together, or not. But in a way, it's a little more romantic to go out together when it actually involves some forethought and sacrifice.

Hmm... that's not true for us because our evenings often require quite a lot of forethought (if not exactly sacrifice, beside $). I just think it's interesting that, at least a fair amount of my friends with new kids, seem to change their language.

Well, I guess language follows reality, in this case.

Immediate addendum: I'm not trying to step on your toes here or anything, and I guess what I'm trying to say is that as your family changes, you actually undergo a paradigmatic shift- your perception of what an evening out and what a date is, changes. I didn't mean to be terse or flip with the last post. ;)
