Uh, what's wrong with YOU?

Read an interesting article by Joss Wedon entitled "Let's Watch A Girl Get Beaten To Death" in response to the brutal killing of Dua Khalil. He questions how we've come to this place in humanity where people idly stand by with their cameras while a young woman is beaten to death. I question his reasoning that something is "wrong" with women, although, yes, I GET what he's saying, I just tend not to point my finger at the slain and abused. But, like Wedon (if you haven't noticed) something has "snapped" in me too - and I agree whole heartedly with this:
Because it’s no longer enough to be a decent person. It’s no longer enough to shake our heads and make concerned grimaces at the news. True enlightened activism is the only thing that can save humanity from itself. ...
All I ask is this: Do something. Try something. Speaking out, showing up, writing a letter, a check, a strongly worded e-mail. Pick a cause – there are few unworthy ones. And nudge yourself past the brink of tacit support to action. ... Even just learning enough about a subject so you can speak against an opponent eloquently makes you an unusual personage. Start with that.

I've made a couple of posts on my oft ignored book blog. Check it out if you're interested. And read that article.

Ahh... this blurs the lines between your two blogs a bit for me. I began to read last night a book called Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures; non-fiction. Accounts of three 20-something Americans and their service in most of the 90's UN Peacekeeping efforts...

As I read last night I thought of videotapes of beheadings, of girls being stoned, of complacency and impotence. I suppose its so that small responses from many can change very large things but in the face of such egregious actions, it just seems insufficient.

"And I have yet to find a culture that doesn’t buy into it....But I can’t contain my despair, for Dua Khalil, for humanity, for the world we’re shaping. "

What a well-written rant. It's a really interesting exploration of cultural mysogyny. Whedon might be a pompous ass, but I do think he is a real feminist.

Thanks for the link.

Great rant! From both of you!

I think Whedon was being facetious about the "wrong with women" comment. Of course, maybe he is that douchey, but I think he was using it sarcastically (which is nigh impossible to discern in print format) to illustrate his next point about how "there is something wrong with women" is our cultural view. And it's fucked.
At least, that's what I think.

Did you read Savage Love last week? About how now there've been studies linking HPV to throat cancer (read oral sex). Now that heterosexual men have an increased cancer risk, you can bet your ass there isn't going to be any more arguement about the HPV vaccine. Sigh.
